Do you have trouble sitting in Half-Lotus posture? Do you have trouble just sitting on the floor? You may think that your age or cultural background mean that you will “never” be able to do it. Well, think again. It’s really an issue of hip flexibility.
Your hips may be a little stiff from lack of use. Most American adults spend the majority of each day sitting, and it is usually in couches or chairs. This type of sitting may not allow you to fully flex your hips. But this is something that you have the power to change.
Gaining hip flexibility is one of the small “quiet” benefits you get from Dahn Yoga class. It doesn’t make a big splash like weight loss, but it can similarly make a difference in our quality of life. There are many exercises that can help you release tension in your hips, but just sitting on the floor in class on a regular basis will increase your flexibility. Take your time and be kind to your body.
