At age 70, I finally made time in my life for yoga and tai chi. For the past 5 months I have averaged going to class 2 times per week at the Rvenna Park Dahn yoga Center and I am definitely reaping the benefits of the stretches, meditation and tai chi postures. My balance and flexibility have improved, I can touch my toes both standing and sitting, hold more postures and I feel a "lightness of being" that was absent before. I'm delighted with my progress so far and plan to continue. At my age, "use it or lose it" definitely applies and I plan to be able to keep "using it".

I'd just fought my way through a monumental traffic jam on the Montlake Bridge, and felt tense and uptight. Walking into the Ravenna Park Dahn Center, the quiet beauty of the place spoke to me. The sound of the bubbling fountain spelled peace. I took a deep breath and the tension of earlier started to drop away. Taking the class, gradually the earlier stress I was holding faded. Deep stretching, breathing, meditation combined to create an hour's oasis in my day. Our instructor encouraged us to take this brief time for ourselves and pay attention to our bodies. I found when I followed her instruction, that I achieved deep relaxation. Every time I take a class, I feel renewed and grateful for the opportunity to tune into my body and tune out other distractions. Since coming to the Dahn Center, I've gained many health benefits including reduced blood pressure, healthy cholesterol, improved eyesight and increased flexibility. I feel better, and my friends say I look good.

Since I started last Oct, there's been an noticeable change in my scoliosis: my back is more flexible than it's been since my pre-military days and I'm standing straighter. My digestion is much better and I'm naturally eating less while being not nearly as hungry as I was when I ate more. I feel younger and worry less about my life, as I did when I was younger. It's been a lot of work and practice but I've made gains here that I've been able to make nowhere else.

I am a practicing member of Dahn Yoga at Ravenna Park because it nurtures me as a whole person and gives me the opportunity to give back as well. My participation feeds my spirit, increases my energy and cares for my physical body all at the same time. Over the past 7 years as a member, I have learned many simple yet powerful tools for increasing my well being on all levels. I can utilize these tools on my own throughout each day. At the same time, I am aware that my experience is magnified being in class at Ravenna Park where I can feel alone and focused, caring for all that I am, and share this “beingness” with like minded and delightful classmates and instructors. It is an investment beyond measure to me as an individual and, I believe, humanity as a whole.
