The Universal Benefits of Meridian Tapping08/20/2014

One of the first things that newcomers to Dahn Yoga might notice is that we perform body tapping as part of our regular class. Our warm up exercise consists of rhythmically tapping the lower abdomen with the palms or the edge of the fists. Sometimes, body tapping is even one of the main exercises in class. This age-old exercise is very beneficial to your health, so don’t mistake it for simply “hitting yourself.” There is deep wisdom here.

Body tapping is a simple technique designed to improve circulation and activate the flow of energy along the body’s energy pathways, known as meridians. Even if you don’t know much about meridians, you can get the benefits of this exercise by tapping in certain areas of the body. The most important area is in the center of your lower abdomen, about two inches below your navel. In Korean, this area is known as the lower “Dahn Jon"; in Chinese languages, it is called the “Dan Tian". Regularly tapping in this area can create energetic balance in your body, making a difference in your overall health.

You can also tap in other areas of your body and you can tap along the lines of the meridians, once you become familiar with them. You don’t even have to be in one of our yoga classes to do it, as, we also use
meridian tapping for tai chi classes. And, we often use body tapping in preparation for meditation. In fact, this exercise has nearly universal application!  Once you have practiced it, you can enjoy the benefits of body tapping with any other exercise or by even itself. Give it a try today!
