Developing Emotional Intelligence Through Yoga Poses

Yoga benefits the mind in a variety of ways, with the capacity to improve cognitive function. In fact, researchers from the University of Illinois have conducted studies proving that just 20 minutes of yoga significantly improved accuracy and speed during working memory tests and enhanced the capacity to focus. But the ancient practice also has a positive effect on another facet of intelligence - that of the emotions. 

As Psychology Today explains, emotional intelligence is the capacity to identify one's own feelings and self-manage those emotions. Awareness and focus are keys to emotional intelligence, and these two attributes are at the core of yoga. With its deep breathing exercises and meditation techniques, the practice has the capacity to enhance self-awareness, improving the ability to recognize when you're upset, happy, sad and so forth. Additionally, as you experience enhanced concentration and a greater ability to empathize with others, you can help them work through their feelings and maintain healthy relationships.
