One of the first things that newcomers to Dahn Yoga notice is the tapping. Methodically and rhythmically tapping yourself with fingertips or the edge of your fists is a regular warm up exercise. Sometimes it is even part of the main exercises in a class. This age-old exercise is very beneficial to your health, so don’t mistake it for simply “hitting yourself.” There is much more to it than that.

It is a simple technique designed to improve circulation and activate the flow of energy along the body’s energy pathways, known as meridians. Even if you don’t know much about meridians, you can get the benefits of the exercise by tapping in certain areas of the body. The most important is in the center of your lower abdomen, about two inches below your navel. In Korean, this is known as the lower “DahnJon,” in Chinese languages, it is called the “DanTian.” Regularly tapping here can create balance in your body and really make a difference in your overall health.

You can tap in other areas or you can tap in a line along the meridians, once you know where they are. And you don’t have to be in our yoga class to do it; we also use meridian tapping for tai chi. classes and we use it in preparation for meditation. In fact, this exercise has nearly universal application. Once you have learned it, you can enjoy its benefits by using it with any other exercise or by itself. Give it a try today!
