Chronic pain gone and losing weight
Janet S., La Grange center, IL
I began practicing Dahn Yoga in February 2010 and have been attending class at least four times a week since then. My motivation to join was my desire to lose 40 pounds that I had rapidly gained over the previous three years. When I started I also had some other physical issues: for a number of months prior to joining I had been seeing a chiropractor on a regular basis to treat tennis elbow and constant pain in my shoulder; I had also been suffering from chronic back pain for 20 years, and had had spinal surgery in 2004.
Although my intent in the beginning was to lose weight through regular exercise, the amazing improvement in my elbow, shoulder, and back has been the real benefit. After about three months the pain in my elbow and shoulder was completely gone and my back had significantly improved. I have also been amazed at the improvement in my flexibility, as well as my ability to now comfortably sit cross-legged on the floor and to get up off the floor with more ease! I have also lost 18 pounds, but my focus now is not losing weight, but feeling good.
The connection between mind, body, and spirit has always been important to me, and in class I am really able to focus on that connection. The classes are great stress relievers, and as I've continued practicing, I have been better able to maintain the calmness I feel in class after I leave. I know that regularly attending class has greatly helped me deal with emotionally difficult situations over the past several months. I always look forward to attending class to shake off stress and stretch aging muscles and joints. I am grateful to Lisa for inviting me to join the LaGrange Body and Brain Center, which is helping me build a healthy body and maintain a happy heart.
