1.What is Dahn Yoga?
Dahn Yoga originated in Korea and is based on a rich history of holistic healing and mind body practices derived from Korean Taoist roots. The concept of Ki, or vital life energy, is fundamental to East Asian philosophy, arts and medicine. It is also called “Dahn” in Korean.“Yoga” is derived from the Sanskrit word for union. Dahn Yoga applies East Asian energy principles to help people develop union of body and mind.
2.What is a typical Dahn Yoga class like?
A typical Dahn Yoga class lasts about an hour and includes:
- Warm Up Exercises --These include “tapping” and abdominal exercises to release tension and prepare the body for “Meridian exercises.
- Meridian Exercises -- Deep stretching, twisting, squeezing, and joint rotation exercises to increase, improve circulation and alignment. These exercises stimulate the body’s Ki energy pathways, called “Meridians.”
- Deep Breathing Exercises -- Recharge your body and clear your mind with special postures and focused breathing.
- Energy Meditation -- Traditionally, yoga was intended to prepare the mind for meditation. Learn to relax and shift your focus away from busy thoughts through various forms of Meditation.
- Cool Down -- End each class with rejuvenating meridian stretching to promote energy flow.
- Tea Time -- In East Asia, tea is often associated with meditation as well as sociability. Dahn Yoga uses tea time as a chance for practitioners to share their impressions of class or ask the instructors questions.
