Meridian Exercises An Integral Part of Dahn Yoga Classes

January 3rd, 2011

The beginning of Dahn Yoga classes consists of Do-in exercises, or Meridian Exercises, to warm up and get ready for deep breathing and meditation. These exercises are also done at the end to wake up the body.

Meridian exercises combine movement, breath, and consciousness for maximum effectiveness. They help center your mind in your body, enhancing your awareness and making it easier to feel ki energy, an essential component of Dahn Yoga training.

Stretching, twisting, squeezing, and joint rotation increase strength and flexibility. Shaking and tapping make the body warmer and release tension. They stimulate blood and energy circulation and greater release of toxins by opening the meridian channels of the body. A light-hearted but deeply effective part of Meridian Exercises is positive affirmations such as, “Thank you, liver!” or “I’m so beautiful!”

Realignment of the main axes of your body is another function of these exercises. They also promote Water Up Fire Down, a phenomenon in which hot “fire” energy comes down the front into your lower belly and gathers in the dahnjon, your energy reserve, while “water” energy goes up the back and cools your head. This enables you to stay grounded, centered, and energized.

The exercises can be modified to suit your needs. You should not force your body to do any exercise it cannot do. By being aware of your body, you can learn how to overcome your limits safely. Keep practicing, and you’ll feel and look great and be a little closer to self-mastery.
