Reflections for a Season of Hope

December 20th, 2011

As the days grow colder and shorter and a new year looms just around the corner, we are prompted to reflect upon the year that is almost ended. This year, 2011, is a year ripe for reflection for, no matter where we live on the planet, we have all witnessed great changes.

This year, our planet was inundated with natural disasters: record setting earthquakes, wildfires, floods, tornadoes, and other storms. In terms of property damage, natural disasters around the globe have made it the costliest year on record. Additionally, physical and emotional fallout from unprecedented manmade disasters has been compounded by a global economy at its weakest point in generations; many are unemployed and nations are buckling under the weight of too much debt. Faced with the multiple pressures of loss, change, and social instability, it is hardly surprising that people everywhere are questioning and challenging our most venerable institutions in spite of great risk and even potential loss of life. Many people are feeling angry, scared, and insecure. In essence, our planet resembles a “ball of confusion.”

Despite all of this, we still have an important choice: we do not have to fear what happens next. Instead, we can take a deep breath during this season and recognize that somewhere deep down we can find the source of hope. Though none of us may be individually responsible for all of the things happening on our planet, we can still play a part.

Dahn Yoga principles teach us that how we think and how we respond to circumstances can affect not only how we feel but also can eventually affect our circumstances. Much of what we are now experiencing flows from the choices we have made, both individually and collectively. Rather than being overly concerned with blaming ourselves or others, we can become leaders and seize opportunities. As long as we are breathing, we have opportunities to choose. This is a cause for hope and can be a source of power.

This December is special - a special time to reflect, a special time to exhale, and a special time to release what has passed. With clear intention, we can breathe in new hope and recognize our roles in creating our future. No matter what the circumstances, it is the spirit of hope that ultimately triumphs and unexpectedly lights up the night. This is a gift we all have the capacity to share.
