Why Should Yoga Be a Lifestyle?

December 20th, 2011

“How long do I have to take this yoga?” is a question commonly asked of Dahn Yoga instructors. It cannot be answered except with an understanding of several factors. First of all, what is the individual’s condition? Secondly, what are the individual’s goals and what do they hope to achieve through Dahn Yoga practice?

For example, someone who has insomnia could experience the positive effects of Dahn Yoga in as little as one month—even in a week. On the other hand, for physical discomfort or ailments that have developed in conjunction with psychological factors, it may require a substantial amount of time before your natural healing ability manifests with regard to the fundamental cause.

No matter what your goal is, the ultimate goal is always a healthier, happier, and more peaceful life. Your life is the cumulative result of each day and, beyond that, each moment is a reflection of your lifestyle.

If you were to develop good living habits and also shake out the stagnant energy that has accumulated in your body and mind throughout the day and replenish yourself with pure, fresh energy every day, how would your life be different?

In Dahn Yoga, we refer to this regular process of cleaning and conditioning your body and mind as “suhaeng.” Suhaeng is about being consistent in your mind and practice for the rest of your life. In this way, the range of ups and downs in your emotions and your life will gradually diminish, you will grow more stable and steady, and your concentration and creativity will improve.

In order to achieve what you want and to create a successful life, your energy must become brighter and stronger. Bright, strong power comes from your inner self, and that power comes from suhaeng. Just as you eat every day for the sustenance of your physical body, try letting suhaeng become a lifestyle for the rest of your life. That time will be time dedicated just for you, time for you to meet with yourself – and it will become the most beautiful time!
